In contemporary Western culture, personal names are little more than labels that distinguish one person from another, but in Biblical times, a person’s name had a much deeper significance. A name in Scripture is often significant of the nature or character of a person, whether it be a person, angel or God Himself. This would apply to cities or places as well, where the name would give the revelation of the combined total nature or character of the people that lived there. God uses names to give us hidden revelation concerning His marvelous truth in the Word. Forever it will be this, “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter,” (Proverbs 25:2). Knowing the definition of the name of something can unlock great hidden truths and revelation that God intends for us to find.

This book is not a study on the principle of names in Scripture but is simply a supplemental resource giving the definitions of every proper name in Scripture as well as the covenantal names of God. For a deeper study on names, I have written a study manual on “The Principle of Names in Scripture” and encourage you to study for yourself the glorious truths of names in Scripture, further making this book an even more invaluable tool as you study God’s precious Word!
